Elizabeth Barrett Browning - How Do I Love Thee?

How Do I Love Thee?, also known as Sonnet 43, was first published in 1850 by Elisabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) as a declaration of her love for her soon to be husband Robert Browning.

The poem is part of a collection entitled "Sonnets from the Portuguese", one of the most familiar collections of love poems in English literature, and has been compared to both Shakespeare and Petrarch. In the 24 months before their marriage in 1846, Elisabeth and Robert exchanged 574 letters.
